At the 2023 FICPI Open Forum, a panel of IP practitioners who have been working to achieve specific goals over a period of a year or more report on their successes and failures along the way, as well as their challenges and tips.
This session "How to implement strategy: Getting results after decisions! Getting things done - Part 2" follows on from the 2022 FICPI Congress in Cannes.
Session moderator, Ian Gill, explains, "The Cannes session provided some options for how to successfully implement projects, and gave some practical examples. At the end of the session we asked for volunteers to join a working group, operating through the course of the year, and then reporting back to London on how things went/what worked/didn’t work."
Ian is a member of FICPI's Practice Management Committee and Partner at AA Thornton in the UK where he is a UK Chartered Patent and Trade Mark Attorney whose practice covers the full range of IP rights and issues.

Who's on the panel?
Ian is joined on the panel by three representatives from IP firms across the world.
Justin J. Cassell, is a Partner at Workman Nydegger in the US. He counsels clients on patent procurement, intellectual property due diligence, validity and infringement, strategic international IP protection, post-grant proceedings, and preliminary patent enforcement and defense actions.
Dr. Jean-Nicolas Longchamp is CEO at Braunpat Braun Eder AG in Switzerland. Thanks to his studies in physics and his interdisciplinary research activities, Jean-Nicolas has considerable knowledge and skill in a large number of technological fields, and enjoyed working on patent applications for inventions in diverse technical areas.
Laura Mannering is a Partner at Bryn Aarflot in Norway as well as Norway's Executive Committee Alternate Delegate and a member of FICPI's Study & Work Group on International Patent Matters (CET 3). Laura holds extensive experience in general and strategic patents counselling, patent drafting and prosecution, and IP analysis including freedom to operate opinions and infringement analysis.
Dr. Howard Read, Partner at Appleyard Lees in the UK. He is also a member of FICPI's Study & Work Group on Software, High-Tech and Computer-Related Issues (CET 6), and Secretary of FICPI-UK. Howard worked in industry and the academic sector before joining the IP profession, and understands the challenges faced in these areas and appreciates the commercial realities of, and the value derivable from, intellectual property.
Why attend this session?
The main focus of the session in Cannes was “The 4 Disciplines of Execution”, a system created by Chris McChesney, Sean Covey and Jim Huling – the 4 disciplines are to identify the most important goal, acting on the lead measures, creating a scorecard and ensuring accountability.
The volunteers in the working group were free to select other systems, but most gravitated towards 4DoX. Volunteers selected existing or new goals relating to live issues in their own businesses and the session will explore what went well and what when not so well at a group level as well as for individuals. The learnings also include insight into the practical application of the theory of 4DoX in IP firms.
