Pedro is currently Associate Partner at ELZABURU SLP in Madrid, Spain.
His main area of expertise is in the field of patents and designs (drafting, prosecution and reports). He is very enthusiastic about design protection in general and the varied ways it is approached in different countries and territories around the world. Pedro says:
“One of the most rewarding aspects of my profession as an IP attorney is being able to help clients (from large companies to start-ups and SMEs) who have begun to develop IP protection policies, and who trust our advice and rely on our work to propel their businesses forward.”
Adding value to clients
Reflecting on how ELZABURU adds value to clients, Pedro explains:
“A very interesting aspect of our profession is that we deal with a wide variety of technologies, which allows us to stay fresh and learn continuously.
“We are a firm that addresses all aspects of IP, constantly updating and striving to offer new services tailored to our clients' needs. For example, in recent years we have created new departments, including media and entertainment, innovation financing and data protection. These now complement our more traditional services in patents, trade marks and litigation.”
The investment that Pedro makes in getting to know the client, understand their needs and putting himself in their shoes reaps rewards for the client and for Pedro himself. He remarks:
“The fact that I have previously worked in industry allows me to better understand my clients and offer them advice on protection strategies, the most appropriate modalities and internationalisation, and to strive to ensure that all this is done in a cost-efficient manner.”
This experience and expertise shines through in the results. One of the firm’s clients, a leader in its sector in Spain, recently launched a new range of products that was to be covered by several inventions. Pedro remembers:
“The corresponding applications were opposed by its competitors, but ultimately we overcame all oppositions, and our work helped our client maintain their market leading position.”
Best practice to share with FICPI members
A best practice that Pedro shares with fellow IP attorneys in the FICPI global community focuses on cultivating a strong firm culture. Pedro comments:
“One of the most striking aspects of our firm is that we work and socialise as a team.”
In practical terms this translates into preparing internal training sessions that may be of interest to everyone, cutting across departmental barriers, to share knowledge and experiences with the whole firm. He notes:
“Making time to celebrate and enjoy events together and welcome new colleagues is important to us too. These elements combine to make sure everyone feels valued and part of the ELZABURU ethos, so that we can move forwards together.”
The future for independent IP attorneys
Pedro feels that professionals in intellectual property should be prepared for change. He explains:
“Without a doubt, one of the biggest changes currently affecting the IP attorney profession is the automation of certain processes.
“The use of powerful computer tools has recently been joined by artificial intelligence and patent drafting assistance programmes.”
The unique skillset of IP attorneys will continue to be critical. Pedro observes:
“These new tools will change the profile of the work we do. In the future our legal, technical and practical knowledge will also necessarily be directed to ensuring the responsible supervision of AI and software drafting tools.”
Value of FICPI membership
Pedro joined FICPI in April 2018 and is active in its work, holding the position of Secretary-Treasurer of the Spanish Section of FICPI since 2022. The Spanish Section is a small but very active group that organises activities and holds meetings with local IP authorities.
He recommends membership as a great way to learn from more experienced professionals around the world.
Reflecting on what makes FICPI unique, Pedro highlights the quality and usefulness of the events the Federation organises, allowing members to keep updated on IP issues and to meet fellow IP experts. Pedro adds:
“What I value most is the closeness of FICPI members, their willingness to help you and share experiences. Once you are a member, it’s easy to make contact and collaborate with other senior IP attorneys from across the globe.”
Final word – outside of work
Pedro takes pleasure in most sports and has practised many of them, including fitboxing, tennis, paddle tennis, football and swimming. You will find him at the gym several times a week and may also spot him out running.
He very much enjoys travelling and takes great delight in discovering the hidden corners of the Spanish countryside and going on mountain excursions.
Concluding the interview, Pedro reveals:
“I think the activity that takes up most of my time is bringing up my two boys, and I’m thrilled to think that they too share my love of sports.”
