Membership of FICPI is open to experienced IP professionals of honourable and moral character who work in private practice, whose peers can confirm their experience and support their application for membership.

An IP practitioner for these purposes is one specialised in IP matters, with the right to represent a party before the authority responsible for granting an IP right, and who has passed a recognised qualification examination for that country, if there is one.

Applications for membership of FICPI by candidates in a country or region where there is an established FICPI National Association or FICPI National Section should usually be made though those associations.

Candidates for FICPI membership who are unable to join an established national group are approved for membership by the Executive Committee, after existing FICPI members have had an opportunity to comment on the candidate’s suitability. These candidates are admitted on an individual basis.

Individual members must usually have at least three years' experience in private practice and have passed a recognised qualification, or have at least five years' experience in private practice within the previous ten years where their country or region does not provide for or require a qualifying examination.

A private practice is generally considered to be a firm that is free to accept or not a professional retainer, subject to the normal ethical standards of the profession.

Patent and trade mark attorneys are welcomed as IP Practitioners*

A technical qualification is desirable for a patent attorney, but it is not an absolute requirement having regard to the field of practice of the applicant and the composition of the profession in their country or region.
