FICPI is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Gianfranco Dragotti on 23 January 2025, at the age of 86.

Gianfranco’s remarkable career in the intellectual property profession began at an impressively young age, while he was still at university. His first steps into the profession were translating patents for an IP firm in Rome—a foundation that paved the way for a lifetime of excellence and dedication. In 1978, he established his own firm, which grew from a one-man boutique into a thriving practice of approximately 40 professionals today.

A distinguished leader, Gianfranco served as President of the Collegio from 2004 to 2010 and, since 2015, held the esteemed position of President of the Disciplinary Board of the Italian Industrial Property Consultants Institute.

Beyond his professional achievements, Gianfranco was widely admired for his integrity, fairness, and unwavering loyalty. His passion for the IP profession was infectious, inspiring colleagues, employees, clients, opponents, and judges alike. This earned him their enduring respect and trust, leading to frequent appointments as a Technical Expert by the Courts of Milan, Turin, Venice, Bologna, Rome, and Trieste.

Gianfranco was also a man who embraced life with great enthusiasm. He found joy in the sea, reading, and savoring fine wine and cocktails. An excellent dancer, he carried himself with a lively spirit and grace, qualities that those who knew him will fondly remember.

He leaves behind a legacy of professionalism, passion, and humanity that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

FICPI extends its heartfelt condolences to Gianfranco’s family, friends, and colleagues. He will be deeply missed.
