On 22 October 2024, the European Patent Office (EPO) will host an online event titled "Patents and Innovation in European Universities," focused on driving innovation from university labs and exploring key trends across European countries.
The commercialization of university intellectual assets is crucial to the future of Europe’s economy and its global competitiveness. Understanding the ecosystems in which universities operate and identifying the best strategies for moving forward are essential.
The event will feature 15 expert speakers from across Europe, including Prof Josep M Garrell, EUA President, Dr Alexandr Hobza, Chief Economist at the European Commission, and Maria Olivares, Head of Innovation at Zürich University among others. They will offer insights through panel discussions, workshops, and the presentation of a new study and tools developed by the EPO’s Observatory on Patents and Technology.
Event highlights:
- Launch of a pioneering Pan-European study of university patents: Be the first to explore a new economic study, "The role of European universities in patenting and innovation” that covers for the first-time academic patents from all over Europe. It features trends, and the challenges ahead of the innovation ecosystem in European higher education institutions.
- Cutting-edge tools: Discover the latest version of the Deep Tech Finder, which has been enhanced and can now map out university-filed European patent applications and university spinouts, offering invaluable insights into the academic innovation landscape.
- Engage with peers: Join dynamic panel discussions and workshops featuring key figures from university management, leading economists, policymakers, and technology transfer professionals. One expert panel, and three workshops are part of the programme.
