Zillur is Chairman at the firm of Rahman IP Solutions in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

He specialises in trade mark prosecution and litigation, patents, and industrial design prosecution.

His wide ranging sector expertise includes the areas of electronics, telecommunications, internet, e-commerce, semiconductors, networking, computer software and hardware, digital media, and financial services.

He describes the most satisfying aspect of his career as playing a role in growing awareness of intellectual property matters to stakeholders, and helping them to understand the value of IP.

“To help increase knowledge of what IP can bring to inventors and companies, I held in-depth discussions and exchanged views with a number of business sectors. That allowed me to gain a very good understanding of their thoughts around IP. These steps also helped IP to get the attention and interest that it deserves in Bangladesh.”

Recent cases of note

Local imitators of established electronics brands Akai and Sansui (originally Japanese and now under Hong Kong ownership), have been problematic for their consumer electronics sales for decades. Around two years ago, the legal brief was entrusted to Rahman IP Solutions.

“We took several useful measures against the imitators. Now the issues are subject to the settlement process which will soon be concluded.”

Best practice to share with FICPI members

Delivering a high-quality service in an efficient and timely manner is critical to the Rahman IP Solutions ethos.

“Our approach means our clients fully appreciate our work and word spreads fast about our services.

“We focus on providing excellence in our services and on delivering those which are in highest demand from clients. With our service-first ethos, we find that profit arrives naturally as a logical consequence of our efficient services.”

The future for independent IP attorneys

An independent IP attorney will increasingly need strong technological awareness to keep pace with rapid change, believes Zillur, as technology now underpins almost every aspect of professional practice and daily life, and the global landscape is evolving constantly.  Zillur emphasises:

“To remain relevant and effective, we must continually adapt, develop our skills, and stay aligned with the speed of technological advancement. Maintaining competitiveness will be essential in order to thrive in this dynamic environment.”

Adding value to clients

Providing services efficiently and in a timely manner is at the heart of Rahman IP Solutions’ offering.

“Delivering services effectively requires commitment and honesty,” underlines Zillur. “All of us in the firm approach our work with integrity and a genuine desire to improve professionally. This mindset helps us to provide services that are both timely and of high quality to our clients and associates.”

Value of FICPI membership

Zillur is a relatively recent FICPI member, having joined in January 2024.  He says:

“As a new member of this prestigious organisation, I am still in the process of discovering the full range of opportunities it offers. I have attended one conference so far (the 2025 World Congress in Naples) and found it highly valuable.”

Including FICPI, Zillur is also a member of several professional bodies: INTA, APAA, CITMA, ECTA and MARQUES, and serves on the governing body of GLIPA.

“I intend to participate more actively in FICPI events and look forward to becoming increasingly engaged and benefiting further from the organisation.”

“I feel fortunate to be part of the intellectual property profession, not least because it provides opportunities to travel and engage with colleagues across the globe. Attending conferences in different countries and cities allows me to experience diverse cultures and perspectives. I value these experiences greatly and look forward to continuing this journey, gaining as much insight and exposure as possible.”

Final word – outside of work

Outside the office, Zillur enjoys reading, listening to music, and spending time with family and friends. Thanks to his great passion for travel, he has visited many countries around the world.

South America and Africa are still on his wish list, along with Alaska, Greenland, Brazil, and the Caribbean. He adds,

“As a great admirer of Bob Marley, I also hope to visit Jamaica!”
