Each year, delegates and country representatives from FICPI's national Sections and Associations invest considerable time preparing Country Reports on developments in their jurisdictions. It is valuable work, giving the Executive Committee (ExCo) a unique view of changes in law, practice, professional issues, and emerging trends across the global community of IP attorneys in private practice.
Presenting that material at ExCo has not always been straightforward. With so much content to cover and limited time available, it was not always easy to give the reports the attention they deserved within the ExCo agenda. More recently, FICPI's Vice President, Michael Caine, has taken on the task of reviewing and synthesising the reports into a concise presentation highlighting key themes and selected developments from around the world.
This special edition takes that evolution a step further.
The new Country Reports Digest makes some of the most interesting insights from the reports available to the wider FICPI membership. It is not a substitute for the full reports, nor is it intended to be comprehensive. Instead, it offers an accessible snapshot of developments that fellow IP attorneys in private practice may find useful, thought-provoking or relevant to their practice. Taken together, the reports provide a valuable source of practical intelligence on developments that may affect clients, filing strategies and practice management across multiple jurisdictions. At the same time, work is under way to improve how the full Country Reports are published online, with the aim of making them searchable and easy to browse by country and by topic. That work is still in progress, and we look forward to sharing more details when it is ready.
The Digest brings together contributions from 27 national and regional groups, providing a remarkably broad picture of developments across the profession. Among the themes that stand out is the growing impact of artificial intelligence: 20 of the 27 respondents reported that AI is already affecting daily professional practice, with examples ranging from prior art searching and patent drafting to translation, document analysis, and interactions with IP Offices.
There are also important developments in law and procedure. Readers will find reports on proposals for a Korean-style discovery system that could significantly strengthen IP enforcement, discussions around possible PCT accession in Argentina, and a range of legislative and procedural changes affecting practitioners in jurisdictions around the world.
Another encouraging theme is the continued use of FICPI Resolutions as practical advocacy tools. Several Sections and Associations reported sharing relevant Resolutions with local authorities and policymakers as part of their engagement activities, demonstrating the value of FICPI's collective expertise in supporting national advocacy efforts.
