Naresh Kilaru is a partner at Finnegan in Washington DC and focuses his practice on trademark, unfair competition, and copyright litigation. Among other things, Mr. Kilaru has extensive experience in litigating cases before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including serving as first chair counsel. Mr. Kilaru’s broad litigation experience also includes jury trials in U.S. district court, examining witnesses and handling oral arguments, conducting mock trials, taking and defending depositions, coordinating expert discovery, overseeing the design and implementation of trademark surveys, participating in hearings and judicial conferences, negotiating settlements, representing clients in mediations, and appellate litigation. Mr. Kilaru is also involved in domestic and international trademark prosecution and counsels clients on brand protection and enforcement strategies in the United States and around the world.

Mr. Kilaru previously served as in-house counsel at Turner Broadcasting System in Atlanta, where he advised internal business clients on all aspects of copyright and entertainment law, including rights clearances, content licensing agreements, production agreements, distribution agreements, transactional issues, and due diligence. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard and his law degree from the George Washington University Law School, where he is currently a guest lecturer in the IP Licensing course. He is is a member of FICPI Study and Work Commission (CET) Group 1 and the Communications Commission, and the American Bar Association where he chairs the IP Transactions & Licensing Committee. CET Group 1 deals with all issues that are related with trade mark registration, prosecution, maintenance and protection.
FICPI’s focus is to improve the legal position of brand owners and facilitate the work of trade mark practitioners.
The group's field of work includes national trade marks, EU trade marks and international trade marks in accordance with the Madrid Agreement and Protocol, with a special focus on the harmonisation of laws at international and national level.
In addition, as the group has a high understanding of the interaction of trade marks with other IP and related rights and the importance of Internet for trade mark owners. There is a special focus on geographical indications and domain names.
