Patenting software-related and computer-implemented inventions can be challenging. In Australia, case law and patent office practice has made the landscape challenging to navigate. This webinar includes a panel of Australian practitioners who will share their different perspectives.

With suggestions for both local Australian attorneys as well as foreign patent practitioners whose clients are interested in filing into Australia, the discussion will be relevant to a wider audience. Amongst others, the panellists will talk about how the patent office persists in, erroneously, conflating “manner of manufacture” with inventive step, but how practitioners nevertheless have to navigate their way around this.

Our panel of practitioners will dissect the nuances of this issue, providing insights into (and condolences and commiserations about) the current practice in Australia and its implications for applicants and attorneys, both locally and abroad.

Key topics we'll explore:
✅ Understanding the patentability criteria for computer-implemented inventions in Australia and how it compares to other jurisdictions
✅ Navigating recent case law and Patent Office practice in Australia
✅ Global perspectives on patenting software-related innovations

In this Australian edition of the Focus 45 webinar series, Louis-Pierre Gravelle will be discussing Patentable Subject Matter with panellists:

Alyssa Telfer, Principal at Phillips Ormonde Fitzpatrick
Matt Pini, Principal at Pini IP
Ronelle Geldenhuys, Principal at Foundry Intellectual Property
