Matthew joined Abel + Imray in 2002, and is based in the Bath Office. During his Ph.D. he worked on developing new synthetic routes to neurologically-active target compounds from carbohydrate starting materials. During his time at university he gained experience working in the laboratories of a pharmaceutical company and as a process chemist with a substantial UK biotech company. He is a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Matthew has gained invaluable experience in industry working for a substantial period on secondment to the in-house patent department of a major pharmaceutical and consumer healthcare company. His work covers a variety of chemical subject matter. He has particular expertise in small chemical entities, drug formulations, biochemistry, printing inks, polymer technology, consumer healthcare, contact lenses, sportswear and cosmetics. He advises on patent infringement and validity, European patent prosecution and spends a large proportion of his time handling oppositions and appeals before the European Patent Office.

Matthew has a CEIPI Diploma on Patent Litigation in Europe from the University of Strasbourg, and was the only UK-based attorney to have received that qualification in 2018 in readiness for the entry into force of the European Unitary Patent Court. Matthew has also been recognised as one of the IP Stars of 2018, 2019 and 2020 by Managing IP.

CET 4 European Patents
CET Group 4 studies the issues of the European Patent and the preparatory works of the Unified Patent and the Unified Patent Court.
We are also following other regional patents (Eurasian Patent, ARIPO, OAPI, etc.).
Our group members regularly meet officers of the European Commission and the European Patent Office.
