About me

Ian has a chemistry degree from Oxford University and heads up the chemistry department at Williams Powell. His experience in this field covers original drafting in such technical fields of polymer foams, agrochemicals, metal alloys and grain refiners (the last two for a university client). However he also has a large generalist patent practice, including a UK medical devices company that he advised from its days as a University spin-out through to a public listing on the AIM exchange, via a number of investment and due diligence rounds.

Ian has also taken the relatively unusual step for a patent attorney of qualifying as a trade mark attorney by examination. Indeed, he was the recipient of the Payne-Bennett Memorial Award for the candidate with the highest mark in the Advanced UK Trade Mark Practice paper. His trade mark clients include a well-known manufacturer of sporting goods (whom he advised on the trade mark implications of a sponsorship dispute), and a windows manufacturer (for whom he has carried out significant enforcement action including two litigation cases before the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court).
