Joan has been involved in IP since 1997, when his first approach to the profession took place at the Valencian Institute of Competitiveness (IVACE). In 2000 he moved into private practice, at Ponti & Partners, SLP. as a Lawyer, where he became partner in 2014.
His academic background includes a degree in Law from the University of Alicante and a degree in Political Science and Sociology from UNED. In addition to this, he holds a Master’s degree in Intellectual Property and Information Technology from the University of Alicante and a postgraduate course in IP Rights Contracting from the Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona).
He practices in prosecution, opposition, enforcement and licensing of IP, with an emphasis on Trademarks, Designs, Copyrights, Domain Names and Unfair Competition. His professional experience extends from advising business on worldwide protection and management of IP rights, the drafting and implementation of licensing programmes, M&A, through enforcement. Joan manages the IP portfolio of numerous Spanish and multinational companies.

He is a member of the Barcelona Bar Association (ICAB) and the Spanish Institute of Patent and Trademark Attorneys (COAPI), in which he currently serves on its Board of Directors. Joan is a regular speaker in the preparation course for the Spanish Patent and Trademark Attorney Examination offered by COAPI and often presents workshops throughout Spain and overseas. He is also a part-time Assistant Lecturer at UOC (Open University of Catalonia) and an authorized Consultant by ACCIÓ (Agency for Business Competitiveness).
At international level, Joan is a member of INTA, ECTA, PTMG and is actively involved in the study committees of FICPI (CET Enforcement and Alternate Dispute Resolution) and AIPPI. Joan is ranked in World Trademark Review 1000 2018.

Roles in FICPI

CET 7 IP Enforcement and Alternate Dispute Resolution
CET Group 7 focuses on contentious IP issues including but not limited to IP opposition (both pre and post grant), revocation, appeal, infringement action, amicable settlement of disputes including via alternate dispute resolution as well as substantive and procedural aspects related thereto.
On behalf of FICPI, Group 7 also endeavours to keep a close watch on all crucial national and international developments on IP enforcement landscape including on custom actions, anti-counterfeit issues, reciprocal judgements, professional privilege, transfer of right etc and keep its membership abreast of such developments from time to time. Group 7 also aims to create a go to list of certified arbitrators and/or mediators within FICPI.
