17 Nov 2023

On 1 December 2020, the European Patent Office (EPO) and the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) embarked on a landmark pilot program.

This program gives the opportunity to nationals and residents of the People's Republic of China to designate the EPO as their International Searching Authority (ISA) and International Preliminary Examining Authority (IPEA) when submitting international patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). China based subsidiaries of foreign companies are also eligible to the pilot. Notably, this opportunity is available when either the CNIPA or the International Bureau (IB) of WIPO serves as the receiving Office.

In this regard, we would like to announce that on 17 November 2023, we will be hosting an online seminar that brings together experts from both the EPO and CNIPA. These experts will provide a comprehensive overview of the program's framework, emphasizing its advantages and opportunities for applicants seeking patent protection in Europe. Furthermore, they will explain how participants in this pilot program can expedite the patent prosecution process at the EPO. We will also take this opportunity to present on the Unitary Patent .
