James P. Chen, Partner/Patent Agent

James Chen Peng is a Patent Agent with a Master's degree in Engineering from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Beihang University. After graduation, he worked at the National Defense Industry Press and joined Kangxin Partners in 2004, where he has been engaged in drafting and filing new patent applications in the fields of electronics and chemistry.

His areas of expertise include semiconductor devices and manufacturing, polymers and composite materials, materials processing, electronic components, liquid crystal drive circuits, electronic equipment, and image processing. James has also received professional training at the U.S. law firm Connolly Bove Lodge & Hutz LLP.

Luna Zhang, Senior Counsel

Luna is an accomplished IP Counsel and Attorney with over 18 years of significant experience in the field of intellectual property. Currently, she plays a pivotal role at Kangxin Partners, one of China’s largest and oldest IP firms, where she leads a global IP team focused on delivering tailored, comprehensive IP solutions for international clients. Her extensive background in the industry has given her a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by IP owners, enabling her team to devise proactive and insightful strategies for effective IP management and enforcement.

Before assuming her current role, Luna served as a representative for CompuMark, Markmonitor, and DWPI within Clarivate Group in China from 2013 to 2018. In this capacity, she was instrumental in localising Clarivate services and fostering robust relationships with clients across corporations, law firms, and government institutions. This experience further solidified her reputation as a trusted advisor within the IP community.

Earlier in her career, Luna sharpened her legal expertise as a Trademark Lawyer at Unitalen Attorneys at Law in Beijing and as a Legal Counsel at Centuryven Group in Hong Kong. This diverse experience has enriched her understanding of the intricacies of IP law and its practical implications for businesses.

Over the course of her career, Luna has successfully managed high-profile cases for renowned international brands, using data analytics to inform strategic IP decisions and enhance enforcement effectiveness. Her commitment to staying abreast of industry trends and technological advancements ensures that her clients receive innovative, cutting-edge advice that propels their IP initiatives forward.

Freder Shen, Patent Agent

Freder holds B.Eng. and M.Eng. degrees in Materials Science from Beihang University, with an academic background covering materials, chemistry, electronics, and semiconductors. Since joining Kangxin in 2008, he has delivered high-level patent drafting, prosecution, re-examination, invalidation, and litigation services for leading global clients across diverse technology sectors.

As a litigant patent attorney certified by the All-China Patent Attorneys Association, Freder is qualified to represent clients in both administrative and civil patent disputes, offering strategic and practical solutions tailored to the complexities of the Chinese IP system. In addition to his practice, he lectures extensively on Chinese patent law and prosecution practice, including customised training for Fortune Global 500 enterprises, and leads professional development programs within Kangxin. In 2014, he was appointed head of the Chemical and Biological Team, guiding a team of specialists in delivering exceptional IP services.
