FICPI tutors taught at the in-person phase of the WIPO-FICPI International Patent Drafting Training Program (IPDTP) in Geneva (June 22–26), with Anupam Trivedi of K&S Partners (India) and Maria Malburg of Dannemann Siemsen (Brazil) as tutors, alongside colleagues from leading European, UK and African IP firms and an US in-house counsel.

The programme brought together participants from around the world — lawyers, engineers, biologists, and administrators — working across a wide range of settings, including startups, small, medium, and large IP firms, tech companies, technology innovation hubs, generics companies, and universities.

It combined patent drafting theory with hands-on workshops, wrapping up with a mock trial on patent infringement. Students' engagement and dedication reflected the growing global demand for quality training in patent drafting and claim interpretation, especially in countries where formal education in this field is still limited.

2026 marks the 5th Edition of the International Patent Drafting Training Program, jointly designed between World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO and FICPI - International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys.

The qualification is now recognised by national IP offices in countries and regions across Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe.

The four-phase course includes distance learning in April/May, an in-person lecture and workshop phase in Geneva in June/July, followed by a distance mentoring phase in August/October and a final exam in November. Certificates will be jointly signed by the WIPO and FICPI Academies and delivered to the students.

FICPI is proud to support initiatives like IPDTP that strengthen IP practitioners' skills worldwide and build a stronger global IP community.

How FICPI makes IP attorneys more effective

FICPI’s dual focus on legal and professional excellence is demonstrated through its training sessions, its Professional Excellence Committee, The FICPI Academy, and the Study & Work Committee and its seven sub-groups including CET 3 which focuses on International Patent Matters, and CET 4 which focuses on European Patents.

In-person training courses such as the International Patent Drafting Programme not only offer opportunities to learn but also to build connections with other independent IP attorneys or more generally among a variety of IP stakeholders around the world, through common interests and concerns.
