The recent online quarterly fellowship of the FICPI-Philippines national group on March 11th, featured an engaging and insightful presentation by Uwe R. Borchert, Treasurer General of FICPI. His talk, “FICPI in the International Context: Why Get Involved?”, offered participants a clear and practical overview of the organisation’s global significance and the advantages of active membership.

Uwe began by outlining his long-standing involvement in FICPI, demonstrating how sustained participation in committees and leadership roles can shape both professional development and the evolution of the IP field. His career progression within the organisation served as a compelling example of the opportunities available to dedicated members.

A highly collaborative environment

A key focus of the presentation was FICPI’s unique identity as the only international NGO composed exclusively of IP attorneys in private practice. This structure fosters a highly specialised and collaborative network built on shared professional interests. With more than 6,200 members across over 86 countries, FICPI provides a global platform for connection, knowledge exchange, and advocacy.

Uwe emphasised that FICPI’s value extends beyond networking. Through its committees, particularly the Study & Work Committee (CET). The organisation actively contributes to shaping international IP policy. Its work includes preparing amicus briefs, engaging with major IP Offices such as WIPO and the EPO, and influencing key developments affecting practitioners worldwide.

Strengthening firms and skills development

He also highlighted FICPI’s strong focus on education and practice management. Initiatives led by the FICPI Academy and the Practice Management Committee provide members with access to training programmes, webinars, and practical resources. Programmes like the SEAD patent drafting course and the FICPI Focus 45 webinar series equip members with both technical expertise and business-oriented skills essential for modern IP practice.

For the audience from the Philippines, the presentation was particularly relevant. As a provisional national section established in 2024, the Philippines is in a strategic position to deepen its engagement within the global FICPI network. Uwe stressed the importance of participation from emerging regions, aligning with FICPI’s goal of expanding its presence in Asia and increasing diversity within its committees and leadership.

Get involved with FICPI

Uwe concluded with a strong call to action, encouraging members to actively participate in committees and initiatives. His message underscored that FICPI membership is not passive, but an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the global IP community while advancing one’s own professional growth.

Overall, the presentation provided valuable insights and inspired attendees to take a more active role within FICPI.
