It's been more than 10 years since an agreement was reached between the Council of the European Union and European Parliament, and now the Unitary Patent and the Unified Patent Court (UPC) are about to become reality.

The new patent system will enter into force on 1st June 2023 and will represent a real turning point for the history of patents in the European Union.

Roberto Pistolesi, FICPI President, attended the inauguration of the UPC which took place today (30th May 2023) in Luxembourg, where the Court of the Appeal has its seat.

The ceremony included speeches by Mr. Klaus Grabinski, President of the Court of Appeal of the UPC; Ms. Florence Butin, President of the Court of First Instance of the UPC; Ms. Kerstin Jorna, Director-General of DG GROW (European Commission) and Mr. Carl Josefsson, President of the Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office.

Mr. Klaus Grabinski, will also be a speaker on the panel “The Unified Patent Court (UPC) – What has been the experience 100 days in?” during the 21st FICPI Open Forum that will take place in London from 4 to 7 October 2023.
