We interview Chad Billings, Partner, and specialist in the areas of electrical, software and mechanical engineering at Birch, Stewart, Kolasch & Birch, LLP (BSKB), to find out more about the BSKB’s operations from its base in Virginia, USA, and why the firm decided to sponsor FICPI.

“As a leading IP law firm, we believe in supporting organisations that bring meaningful contributions to the international IP landscape. FICPI’s commitment to advancing best practices and fostering collaboration among independent IP professionals aligns with our own values. Through this sponsorship, we’re able to engage more deeply with a global network of peers, exchange insights, and remain closely connected to evolving trends in the field,” explains Chad.

Firstly, our thanks for choosing to sponsor FICPI. Could you tell us what prompted your decision?

BSKB has a long-standing history of involvement with FICPI, with our partners having held leadership roles and participated in committees at both national and international levels. We've seen firsthand the value FICPI brings to the global IP community, and we’re proud to support and stay actively involved in that mission.

Could you introduce us to BSKB and tell us more about your operations?

Birch, Stewart, Kolasch & Birch, LLP is a globally respected intellectual property law firm with a strong reputation for excellence in securing and protecting IP rights. We offer comprehensive services across all areas of IP law, including patent prosecution, post-grant proceedings, litigation, design patents, trade marks, licensing, and strategic counselling. Tell us about who we’ll meet from BSKB at the 2025 FICPI World Congress and the benefits they have found from being a member

I’m a Partner at BSKB and with my fellow Partner MaryAnne Armstrong, plus Mary Kate Hicks on the marketing side, we look forward to meeting FICPI members at the World Congress.

From my own perspective, I can share that I’ve been a FICPI member for nine years and currently serve on CET 6, the Study & Work Group that focuses on development in software, high tech and computer-related issues.

One of the most rewarding aspects of FICPI membership has been forming genuine connections and friendships with patent professionals from all over the world. FICPI provides a unique platform to discuss challenges and learn from each other’s experiences, which is something that has greatly enriched my own practice.

The sense of community within FICPI is truly special, and I’ve appreciated the opportunity to get to know so many wonderful people on both a professional and personal level.

MaryAnne is also very involved in FICPI. She is a member of the DEIA committee, and holds the position of Reporter for CET 3, the Study & Work Group that concentrates on international patent matters.

What benefits have you found from attending previous FICPI Open Forum, Congresses, webinars and networking opportunities?

I’ve always enjoyed all the FICPI events.

They are thoughtfully designed to foster both professional development and meaningful networking. The size and structure of these events offer an ideal environment to build lasting relationships. I’ve found the educational sessions insightful and the social programs engaging and enjoyable. Each event is well-organised, balancing substance with opportunities to genuinely connect with my global peers.

Thank you Chad, we look forward to seeing you all at the World Congress in Naples in October 2025!
