We interviewed session moderator, Louis-Pierre Gravelle, Vice President of FICPI’s Practice Management Committee and Partner at Bereskin & Parr in Canada to bring you a taster of the upcoming session on business development taking place at the 2023 FICPI Open Forum in London from 4-7 October.

The Open Forum is open to all: FICPI members, those thinking about membership, and anyone else from around the world with an interest in patents, trade marks or running an IP firm. Meet connections old and new from across the globe at the FICPI Open Forum, sharpen your knowledge on IP topics, discuss practice management, and enjoy the social and cultural opportunities too.

What do you hope delegates will get out of this session?

Delegates should appreciate that Business Development is a whole-firm exercise. Whether you’re a rainmaker, a senior professional, a paralegal, an assistant, each person has an opportunity to further deepen a relationship with a client.

Key learning points

Hear from in-house counsel on what they consider to be important in building and maintaining a relationship with a service provider.

Why attend?

The business of IP is changing, and there is more focus on providing value-added services to clients.  Not only do you need to have the capacity to deliver those services, you’ll need to develop existing relationships into this new work, and develop new relationships.Tips, tricks and best practices will be presented and discussed.

Introduce the speakers

Michael Evans has deep experience working with IP firms, having spent some time with Marks Clerk in the UK before opening his own business, BD for IP. Julie Demers transitioned to working in-house for Legal affairs & Human Capital, MANAC, after having practiced law in a firm, and now oversees a significant budget of outside service providers. Eduardo Mello e Souza’s role at Dannemann Siemsen Advogados leverages BD skills honed through years of experience both in companies and now as a partner in Brazil’s largest firm.

When is the session taking place?

It's on 6 October 2023, at 11-1230 and it's part of the FICPI Open Forum's IP practice management stream.
